We are taking active advantage of opportunities to provide management-oriented consulting in an enlarged European Union. Berlinwasser International is engaged in projects that are creating and enhancing the institutional and administrative capacities of accession countries to facilitate the introduction of European water and wastewater standards.
European roots
Europe is the base from which Berlinwasser International develops its activities. Gradual harmonization of East European water systems with European standards and the implementation of “Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council for establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy” present major challenges to local water supply and wastewater operations in accession countries. Berlinwasser International AG is actively supporting such operations in those areas by putting its skills and expertise to work in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
Europe is home to 13% of the world’s population, and around 8% of the world’s water resources are found here. Water is supplied to 97% of Europeans and 97% are connected to a water disposal system.
The naturally available water supply in Europe strongly reflects the effects of human activities: dams, canal systems and lowering of the ground water level. There is a North-South divide associated with the distribution of water resources in Europe.
Water and climate change
Increasing aridity and water scarcity are perceptible signs of climate change in Europe. National and European strategies for sustainability, designed to reduce the waste of water and improve water efficiency, take a prominent place on the policy agenda. Brussels sees an enormous potential for saving water in Europe. Technological improvements could reduce water consumption by around 40%, according to one EU study. Berlinwasser International is supplying effective instruments for this task and is experienced in implementing programmes to reduce pipeline losses and improving quality during ongoing operations of sophisticated plants and systems.
