First 6 months of operating St Martin WWTP

Press release from 4/29/2009
Assessment of the achieved results

Port Louis _ Berlin - One of the administrative requirements upon taking over the operation of the St. Martin Wastewater Treatment Plant was the compilation of a full set of documentation necessary for any WWTP operation including operations, maintenance and health & safety manuals, which had to be drafted anew. This was followed by a comprehensive training programme for all of BWIs 35 head strong local staff as well as the clients involved personnel. In total 20 lessons were organised onsite. In addition, a comprehensive internal and external reporting system for a complete process control and supervision of the effluent standards was established.

On the technical side, progress was made at several points. In order to bring down operation cost and increase the sludge processing efficiency, tests on identifying the most suitable polymer for sludge thickening and dewatering were carried out. After identification of the best polymer, its procurement is currently underway. This will allow for substantial polymer cost savings over the next 6.5 years of BWIs plant operation.

In order to improve process efficiency and rehabilitate first parts of the treatment plant in need of refurbishment, several technical studies were submitted to the client – the WMA – who is responsible for capital expenditures. These are currently in the process of examination and consequent approval. These improvements concern the treatment of filter backwash water, the operation of the aeration blowers, the refurbishment of the sand filtration units as well as the centrate treatment from the centrifuges.

Finally, several smaller improvements in the operation of the WWTPs laboratory and the maintenance department are under way for cost saving purposes and efficiency increases.
