Berlinwasser takes over operation of St Martin WWTP

Berlin _ Port Louis, 9 September – Since 1st September 2008, Berlinwasser International AG has taken over operation of St. Martin Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mauritius. "With the know-how of the Berlinwasser Group on our side, together with our partner ONSIONG BROS & CO LTD, we intend ensuring secure and reliable operation", explains Dieter Ernst, Chairman of the Board of BWI: "We believe, that the unique combination of operating experience as well as local and international know-how among our partners, together with achievements on similar projects will enable us to deliver highly efficient services underpinned by world-class management tools and effective local organization.”

St Martin Wastewater Treatment Plant is part of a government scheme aimed at improving the quality of the coastal water. The treatment plant has a capacity of 70,000 m3/d; its construc-tion was funded by the European Investment Bank and was completed in 2005. Berlinwasser International AG will be responsible for management and operation of the treatment plant for the next seven years.
The wastewater is treated in the plant by conventional means. The biogas produced during the anaerobic sludge treatment is converted into electrical energy and is used for operation of the plant. A third treatment stage with UV and sand filter treats the wastewater which is then used for agriculture.
